The car-based crossover Subaru SUV Outback Sport is the brand's bread-and-butter. But like most automakers, Subaru needs to attract younger buyers, and that means developing style and speed to go along with its image of dependability. To get there, Subaru has a new turbocharged Forester sport-utility vehicle that adds about one-third more horsepower. The changes, plus a seven-passenger SUV due in 2005, a high-performance premium sports car and a gas/electric hybrid, are aimed at increasing Subaru's U.S. sales 40% by 2007.
